About Stump Grinding

That leftover stump in your yard is more than just an eyesore - it's a ticking time bomb for your property. Stump grinding eliminates the tripping hazard, removes the pest magnet that attracts termites and carpenter ants, and stops underground root growth that can crack foundations and pipes. For homeowners in Onondaga, Lansing, and throughout Mid-Michigan, professional stump grinding is one of the smartest preventive investments you can make. Our commercial-grade equipment handles stumps of any size, grinding 6-12 inches below ground level so you can plant grass, gardens, or new trees over the area.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stump Grinding

Why should I grind a stump instead of just leaving it?

Leftover stumps create multiple problems: they're tripping hazards, attract termites and carpenter ants that can spread to your home, allow fungal diseases to infect healthy trees, and the root system continues growing underground - potentially cracking foundations, sidewalks, and pipes. Stump grinding eliminates all these risks permanently.

How deep do you grind stumps?

We grind stumps 6-12 inches below ground level - deep enough to prevent regrowth and allow you to plant over the area. For areas where you want to replant trees, we can grind deeper and wider to remove major roots. After grinding, we fill the hole with wood chips and level it with your surrounding landscape.

Can you grind stumps near foundations or in tight spaces?

Yes! We have specialized equipment for tight spaces. Our stump grinders can access areas as narrow as 36 inches wide. For stumps extremely close to foundations, we use protective barriers and precision grinding techniques to avoid damage. We've safely ground stumps between houses, near septic systems, and adjacent to driveways throughout Mid-Michigan.

How much does stump grinding cost?

Stump grinding typically costs $200-$800 depending on stump size, location, and root system complexity. Small stumps (under 20 inches diameter) average $200-$300, medium stumps $300-$500, and large stumps (over 36 inches) $500-$800+. Factors like limited access, extensive surface roots, or rocky soil can increase costs. We provide free, all-inclusive quotes.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

No - when ground properly 6+ inches below the surface, stumps don't regrow. We eliminate the root crown where new growth originates. However, some tree species (like maples, poplars, and willows) have aggressive surface roots that may send up shoots from remaining roots. These can be easily managed with occasional mowing or we recommend full root removal for problematic species.
